The upper stretch of the Ganges is located in Himalyan region of India.According an article published in Frontline by Purnima S. Tripathi (June,2013) ,'The Centre’s notification of a 100-km stretch along the Bhagirathi river in Uttarakhand as an eco-sensitive zone evokes a strong reaction from the Congress government in the State as well as from the BJP, besides sparking protest demonstrations.'
